Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) Pilot Program
The Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) Pilot Program is designed to address the critical public safety issue of fatal and severe injury crashes by detecting and citing speeding vehicles in high-injury streets, thereby promoting safer driving behavior and protecting lives. This program uses advanced radar and high-resolution technology to capture images of rear license plates on vehicles traveling 11 MPH over the posted speed limit. Public Works will deploy eighteen (18) ASE devices across the City of Long Beach. No information is shared with any outside agency including but not limited to law enforcement agencies. Limited data is collected (only rear license plate) from speeding vehicles to obtain registered vehicle owner's address. Vehicle information can only be retained if cited or fined for a speed violation, else all data shall be destroyed within 5-business days after the photograph was first taken.
The pilot program may only operate for a maximum of five years, with an ending date before January 1, 2032.
